The town of Cowpens was originally an overnight stop for cattle drovers and is famous for the Battle of Cowpens in 1781 in a victory for the Colonists that became a turning point in the Revolutionary War and two naval ships were named USS Cowpens in honor of the battle. Located near the border of Spartanburg and Cherokee counties it is ideal for those who value small town living and yet must be close enough to Spartanburg or Gaffney for daily commutes.
The town today has a little over two thousand residents and the annual Mighty Moo Festival honors the sailors of CVL 25 and CG 63 attracts many with a golf tournament, beauty pageant, baseball game, and parade. Community is a very important focus of the lives of many Cowpens residents.
